E-Trader License Dubai (2026): Cost, Eligibility, Rules & Alternatives
Dubai’s E-Trader licence is one of the business licence types recognised within the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism licensing framework. It is designed around eligible individual and home-based business models.
The important question is not simply whether an E-Trader licence is cheap. It is whether the licence matches your activity, applicant status, banking needs, sales model, tax position and future growth plan.
E-Trader: Quick Facts
What Is an E-Trader License in Dubai?
The Dubai E-Trader licence is a DET licensing route associated with eligible individual and home-based commercial activity, including certain online and social-media-led business models.
- It is a Dubai licence. Do not assume another emirate uses the same eligibility or activity rules.
- It is not automatically suitable for every online business. Products, imports, staffing, premises and regulated activities can change the licence you need.
- It does not eliminate tax obligations. Corporate Tax and VAT are separate from licensing.
- It does not guarantee bank-account approval. Banks apply their own KYC, AML and onboarding requirements.
- Current eligibility and fees should be verified before payment. Avoid relying on old DED Trader articles as if every condition remains unchanged.
Who Should Consider an E-Trader Licence?
The strongest E-Trader use case is usually a relatively simple, individual-led business that does not yet need a conventional corporate structure.
E-Trader May Be Worth Checking If:
- You will operate the business personally.
- Your activity can be licensed under the current E-Trader route.
- The business is home-based or primarily digital.
- You sell services or products through permitted online channels.
- You do not require a large physical operating setup.
- You understand that banking and tax are separate compliance decisions.
- You are comfortable upgrading later if the operating model changes.
A Full Company May Be Better If:
- You need multiple shareholders or investors.
- You intend to build a separate corporate entity.
- You require substantial staffing or immigration capacity.
- You need a shop, warehouse or other commercial premises.
- You import, store or distribute products at scale.
- Your activity requires significant external approvals.
- Your banking, contracting or investment needs require a stronger corporate structure.
E-Trader License Dubai Eligibility in 2026
This is the part where many online guides become unreliable. Older DED Trader material and current service-centre information often refer to residency, Emirates ID, age, nationality and activity conditions, but the current public DET licensing overview does not publish one complete universal eligibility matrix for every applicant and activity.
For that reason, Business & Beyond does not recommend treating an old “21+, UAE resident, all activities allowed” checklist as a guaranteed rule.
Eligibility should be checked using the actual applicant nationality/residency status and the exact DET activity intended for the business.
Before Applying, Verify:
- Applicant nationality
- UAE residency status where relevant
- Emirates ID / identification requirements
- Dubai residential or operating-address requirements
- Exact DET business activity
- Whether the activity is professional or commercial
- Whether product sales are permitted for that applicant
- Whether another authority must approve the activity
Important: DET currently lists E-Trader as a Dubai business licence type, but applicant-level eligibility should be confirmed live through DET / Invest in Dubai before paying fees.
This is especially important for expatriate applicants and anyone planning to sell physical products rather than provide professional services.
Can Expats Get an E-Trader License and Sell Products?
Do not treat “E-Trader” as one unlimited licence covering every nationality, product and online business model.
Expat Applicants
Current Dubai service-centre information indicates that UAE-resident expatriates may be eligible for E-Trader licensing in appropriate cases. However, activity availability can differ.
Confirm the applicant and activity with DET rather than relying on a blanket “all expats qualify” statement.
Physical Products
Selling physical products can create additional licensing, product, import, storage, customs and fulfilment considerations.
Do not assume that every E-Trader applicant can use the licence for unrestricted physical-goods trading.
Professional Services
Consulting, design, digital and other service activities may fit more naturally within an individual online/home-business model, provided the specific activity is available.
Regulated professional services can still require additional approvals.
E-Trader vs Mainland vs Free Zone Licence
Choose the structure around the operating model, not merely the lowest licence fee.
| Factor | E-Trader | Standard Dubai Mainland | Free Zone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical Owner Model | Individual/home-business route, subject to current eligibility. | Can support different legal forms, including sole and company structures. | Entity or permit structure under the relevant free-zone authority. |
| Best Fit | Simple individual-led online or home-based activities. | Broader UAE-facing operations, trading, services, staffing and premises. | Specialised ecosystems, international services, startups and selected trading models. |
| Office / Premises | Designed around home-based operation rather than a conventional shop or office. | Premises requirements depend on activity and legal structure. | Depends on free zone and facility package. |
| Employees / Visas | Do not assume employee sponsorship is automatically available. Check current licence conditions. | Can support workforce and immigration planning subject to applicable rules. | Visa eligibility depends on authority, package and facility. |
| Corporate Structure | Designed primarily around the individual licence holder. | Can support shareholders, investors and scalable legal structures. | Can support shareholder/company structures under the relevant authority. |
| Banking | Business banking may be possible, but bank onboarding remains independent. | Corporate banking available subject to bank KYC/AML approval. | Corporate banking available subject to bank KYC/AML approval. |
| Scaling | Often suitable as a lean starting route where eligible. | Generally stronger where operations, staffing and local presence will grow. | Can scale well where the selected free zone suits the business model. |
How Much Does an E-Trader License Cost in Dubai?
You will frequently see E-Trader articles quote AED 1,070 or AED 1,370. Those figures remain widely used in the Dubai market, and current service-centre material continues to publish similar numbers.
However, DET’s public 2026 business-licensing overview does not currently publish one universal E-Trader tariff covering every activity and applicant. For regulatory accuracy, the live DET / Invest in Dubai invoice should be treated as the final fee authority.
The total payable amount can also differ where transaction charges, commercial membership, trade-name requirements or external approvals apply.
Use This Cost Rule
Treat published E-Trader figures as planning references, not guaranteed quotations.
- Confirm the exact business activity.
- Confirm whether the activity is professional or commercial.
- Check applicant eligibility first.
- Check trade-name requirements.
- Check Chamber or other activity-related charges.
- Check any external approval fees.
- Use the live government invoice before making the final decision.
Why we do not publish one guaranteed 2026 E-Trader price: a fee quoted without the applicant, activity and current authority invoice can become misleading. Business & Beyond prefers to confirm the live licensing position before presenting a final setup cost.
How to Apply for an E-Trader License in Dubai
The exact portal flow can change, but the licensing decision should follow this sequence before payment.
Confirm Eligibility
Check the applicant’s current eligibility under the Dubai E-Trader route.
Choose the Exact Activity
Match what you will actually sell or provide to the correct DET activity.
Check Restrictions
Confirm whether product sales, professional services or external approvals apply.
Choose the Trade Name
Select a compliant name under Dubai’s current trade-name requirements.
Prepare Applicant Details
Provide the identification, contact, address and business information requested.
Submit Through the Current Channel
Use DET / Invest in Dubai or the applicable authorised licensing channel.
Review the Government Invoice
Verify the actual licence and activity-related charges before payment.
Receive the Licence
Once approved and paid, keep the digital licence and associated records.
Set Up Tax & Banking
Licensing is only the beginning. Assess banking, Corporate Tax and VAT separately.
What Can You Do With an E-Trader Licence?
The correct answer depends on the exact activity approved on the licence.
Online & Social Commerce
The E-Trader framework was developed to support online, social-media and home-based entrepreneurship in Dubai.
The specific activity still determines what can legally be sold or provided.
Professional Services
Certain consulting, creative, technical and digital-service activities may be suitable where the activity is available to the applicant.
Regulated Activities
Healthcare, financial, education, food, product-regulated and other controlled activities may require separate approvals or a different licence route.
Do not choose the licence first and force the activity into it. Start with what the business will actually do, then determine whether E-Trader is the correct licensing route.
Can an E-Trader License Holder Open a Business Bank Account?
Potentially, yes. It is inaccurate to say that E-Trader licence holders can only use personal accounts.
For example, Dubai Islamic Bank currently advertises an e-Trader Business Account specifically for DED Trader licence holders. That demonstrates that dedicated business-banking products can exist for this licence type.
However, a licence never guarantees approval. Each bank applies its own KYC, AML, customer-profile and commercial-risk criteria.
Banking File May Include:
- Valid business licence
- Applicant identification
- Business activity explanation
- Website or social-media presence
- Source-of-funds information
- Expected customers and payment flows
- Invoices, contracts or commercial evidence where available
- Expected transaction countries and currencies
Corporate Tax and VAT for E-Trader Businesses
Licensing and taxation are separate systems. Holding an E-Trader licence does not itself determine whether Corporate Tax or VAT applies.
Corporate Tax — Natural Persons
Where an E-Trader business is carried on by an individual as a natural person, the UAE Corporate Tax natural-person rules are important.
The FTA states that a natural person is subject to Corporate Tax on Business or Business Activities in the UAE where total turnover from those Business or Business Activities exceeds AED 1 million within a Gregorian calendar year.
This is a turnover test — not a profit threshold. Wage income, Personal Investment Income and Real Estate Investment Income are excluded from the business-activity turnover test under the relevant rules.
Where registration is required, the FTA states that the natural person must register by 31 March of the calendar year following the year in which the AED 1 million turnover threshold was exceeded.
Read the UAE Corporate Tax GuideVAT Registration
For a UAE-resident business, mandatory VAT registration generally applies when the total value of taxable supplies and imports exceeds AED 375,000 during the previous 12 months, or is expected to exceed that amount within the next 30 days.
Voluntary VAT registration may be available where taxable supplies, imports or taxable expenses exceed AED 187,500, subject to the VAT rules.
Online sellers should therefore monitor taxable turnover continuously rather than waiting until the end of the year.
VAT Registration & ComplianceImportant correction to older E-Trader guides: the Corporate Tax natural-person threshold is not “profit above AED 375,000”. The AED 1 million natural-person gateway is based on turnover from Business or Business Activities conducted in the UAE.
When Should You Move Beyond an E-Trader Licence?
Growth alone does not automatically force a specific company structure, but changes in how the business operates can make E-Trader unsuitable.
You Need Shareholders or Investors
If you need equity investors, partners or a separate corporate structure, a conventional mainland or free-zone entity may be more suitable.
You Need Premises or Staff
A business that needs a shop, office, warehouse or significant staffing should reassess whether the E-Trader model still fits.
Your Product Model Changes
Imports, warehousing, wholesale distribution or larger-scale product trading can require a broader commercial licensing structure.
Banking Requirements Increase
More complex transaction flows, investors, corporate contracts or financing may justify moving to a stronger corporate structure.
Your Geography Expands
If you expand across markets, distribution channels or regulated jurisdictions, review whether the original licence still covers the operating model.
Your Activity Becomes Regulated
New services or products may bring additional approvals, licensing or legal-form requirements.
Is E-Trader Actually the Right Licence for You?
Use E-Trader because it fits the business — not simply because a search result says it is Dubai’s cheapest licence.
A structure that is inexpensive today can become expensive later if the business must be amended, relicensed or rebuilt because the original activity, ownership or operating model was wrong.
Five Questions to Answer First
- What exactly will you sell or provide?
- Who owns and operates the business?
- Will you sell physical goods or only services?
- Do you need employees, premises or investors?
- What banking and transaction profile will the business require?
E-Trader License Dubai FAQs
What is an E-Trader licence in Dubai?
E-Trader is one of the business licence types recognised by Dubai DET. It is associated with eligible individual and home-based business activities, including certain online and social-media-led business models.
Is the E-Trader licence still available in Dubai in 2026?
DET’s current business-licensing information continues to list E-Trader as a Dubai mainland licence type. Eligibility for a particular applicant and activity should still be confirmed through the current DET / Invest in Dubai process.
How much does an E-Trader licence cost?
Market and service-centre sources commonly quote figures around AED 1,070–1,370 before certain transaction or activity-related charges. However, DET’s public 2026 overview does not publish one universal E-Trader tariff, so the live government invoice should be used as the final fee reference.
Can expatriates apply for an E-Trader licence?
Potentially, depending on the current applicant and activity rules. Do not rely on a blanket expat-eligibility statement. Confirm the applicant’s nationality, residency status and exact business activity through the current licensing channel.
Can an expat sell physical products using E-Trader?
Do not assume that every applicant can use E-Trader for unrestricted physical-product sales. Activity and applicant eligibility should be confirmed with DET. Businesses involving imports, warehousing or larger-scale product trading may require a broader commercial structure.
Do I need an office for an E-Trader licence?
The route is designed around home-based / individual business activity rather than a conventional commercial shop or office. The exact address and activity requirements should still be confirmed for the application.
Can an E-Trader licence sponsor employees?
Do not assume employee sponsorship is automatically included. Historic official guidance provided limited visa treatment in specific Emirati-owned circumstances, so current staffing eligibility should be verified before choosing E-Trader where hiring is important.
Can an E-Trader holder open a business bank account?
Business banking can be possible. For example, Dubai Islamic Bank currently markets an E-Trader Business Account for DED Trader licence holders. Account approval remains subject to each bank’s KYC, AML and risk criteria.
Does E-Trader have Corporate Tax obligations?
Where the business is carried on by a natural person, Corporate Tax applies to Business or Business Activities in the UAE when total business turnover exceeds AED 1 million in a Gregorian calendar year, subject to the UAE Corporate Tax rules.
Is the AED 1 million Corporate Tax threshold based on profit?
No. For the natural-person gateway, the relevant threshold is total turnover from Business or Business Activities conducted in the UAE, not profit.
When must an E-Trader business register for VAT?
For a UAE-resident business, mandatory VAT registration generally applies when taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 over the previous 12 months or are expected to exceed that amount within the next 30 days.
Can an E-Trader voluntarily register for VAT?
Voluntary registration may be available where taxable supplies, imports or taxable expenses exceed AED 187,500, subject to the applicable VAT rules.
How long does an E-Trader licence take to issue?
Processing time depends on the application, activity, identity verification and any approval requirements. Do not rely on a fixed 24-hour or 3–5 day promise without checking the current application channel.
Is E-Trader better than a mainland company?
Not necessarily. E-Trader can suit a simple individual/home-based business, while a conventional mainland structure can be more appropriate for multiple shareholders, substantial staffing, premises, trading or broader UAE operations.
Is E-Trader better than a free-zone licence?
It depends on the business model. A free zone may be stronger where you need a corporate entity, visa package, specialised ecosystem or particular international operating structure.
Can I move from E-Trader to another licence later?
A growing business can move to a different mainland or free-zone structure, but the process should be planned around contracts, banking, tax registrations, activity and business continuity.
