Dubai Trade Name Reservation: Rules, Fees & Process
Choose your company name with a clear plan. This guide explains what to check before applying, how to organise your shortlist and what to do after your name is reserved.
What is trade name reservation?
A trade name identifies your business. Reservation records the proposed name during the setup process; it does not replace your business licence or a trademark registration.
Start by deciding what the company will do and where it will be registered. Then assess the name against that authority’s requirements.
Dubai trade name rules to check first
Dubai’s official reservation guidance covers these points:
- Distinctiveness: avoid similarity to existing brands or government projects.
- Activity: the wording should reflect the proposed business.
- Acceptable wording: avoid offensive language, divine names and restricted political or religious references.
- Personal names: family, tribal or other individuals’ names must relate to the licensee.
- Arabic and English: use literal phonetic rendering, rather than translating the name’s meaning.
The UAE government also requires the appropriate legal-form suffix, such as LLC, and compatibility with the company’s legal status. Confirm the exact full name with your licensing authority.
Review spelling, word order and pronunciation before submitting. Keep one agreed version in your working documents so your partners and advisers are reviewing the same proposal.
How to reserve a trade name in Dubai
- Prepare your business brief. Write down the intended activity, jurisdiction and proposed legal structure. For help with the activity brief, read our business activity selection guide.
- Create a shortlist. Prepare several alternatives in preference order. Check that you would be comfortable using each across your website, proposals and company stationery.
- Check official availability. For the Dubai service, use the Invest in Dubai reservation service. Apply through its portal or a service centre.
- Review the application and payment. Confirm the submitted wording and the payable amount before proceeding.
- Save the result. Keep the certificate, reference and receipt together. Check the issued details and any expiry date before continuing your setup.
Account requirements: the standalone Dubai service requires a verified portal account; its English guidance lists no documents. Formation requirements are separate.
Dubai trade name reservation fees
The official service lists AED 620. Confirm the payable amount before applying; this fee covers the trade name, rather than full company setup.
| Quote item | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Government name service | Which authority and service does the charge cover? |
| Adviser or service-centre assistance | Is assistance included or priced separately? |
| Changes or another application | What would be payable if you revise the proposal? |
| Later setup stages | Which registration and licensing costs remain outside this quote? |
Request an itemised quote rather than comparing a name-reservation charge with a full setup package. Use our business license in Dubai guide to plan the wider application.
Mainland and free zone name reservation
Dubai mainland
Use the Dubai service and confirm the proposed name alongside your activity and legal form. Ask which later steps your application still needs.
A selected free zone
Check that zone’s own application route, naming guidance and quote. For example, DMCC processes company name reservation within its online setup application.
When comparing routes, ask each authority the same questions: who handles the name request, when payment is due, what the quotation includes and how amendments are handled.
Prepare a useful company name shortlist
Use this worksheet before contacting an adviser. It is a planning aid; it does not determine whether a name is available or approved.
| Information | What to prepare |
|---|---|
| Preferred names | Three alternatives, ranked in order. |
| Business description | A plain-language explanation of what customers will buy from you. |
| Spelling | The intended wording and any Arabic rendering to review. |
| Registration route | Dubai mainland or the specific free zone under consideration. |
| Brand plans | Preferred domain, social handles and whether trademark advice is needed. |
| Launch plan | Your intended setup date and who will track application progress. |
For example, a founder selling home accessories can explain the product range before discussing name wording. A consultant can describe the services offered. These activity descriptions make the naming discussion more useful than sending a proposed brand alone.
Avoid ordering signage or printing large quantities of stationery while the wording is still being reviewed.
Reservation, trademarks and domain names
The UAE government distinguishes local trade-name registration from trademark registration through the Ministry of Economy and Tourism. If brand protection matters to your business, assess that separately using the Ministry’s trademark registration service.
A domain search is useful for planning your online presence. Treat it as a separate check and keep a record of the names you are considering.
What to do after the name is reserved
- Review the exact spelling and company details shown on the issued document.
- Record its expiry date and ask about the current renewal or extension process if your setup is delayed.
- Keep the certificate and application reference accessible to everyone handling the setup.
- Confirm the next licensing steps before setting a launch date.
Trade-name certificates are renewable according to UAE government guidance. Use the dates and terms on your own reservation rather than assuming a fixed validity period.

Dubai trade name reservation: FAQs
Where should I check company name availability?
Use the official service linked in the application steps above. Also record the exact spelling you checked, so you can compare it with the submitted proposal.
How much should I budget for name reservation?
See the published fee above, then request a quote that identifies the government charge, any assistance and the separate costs for later setup stages.
How long is my reservation valid?
Check your issued certificate and the authority’s current terms. If your setup timetable changes, ask about renewal before the recorded expiry.
Should I prepare alternative names?
Yes. A ranked shortlist lets you discuss another option without restarting the naming exercise. Keep each proposal consistent with your business brief.
Does reserving a trade name register my trademark?
No. Trademark registration is a separate Ministry process. Review your brand-protection plans alongside the company-name application.
What should I send Business & Beyond?
Send your preferred names, a description of the business, your intended jurisdiction and your setup timetable. Include any existing brand or parent-company connection that needs review.
