UAE corporate banking · KYC preparation and ongoing reviews
Bank Compliance for Free Zone Companies in the UAE
Prepare a clear explanation of your company’s ownership, business activity, funding and expected payments. Understand the bank’s document requests and keep the information current after the account opens.
Reviewed: 28 October 2026. Check current eligibility and document requirements with the bank and application channel you intend to use.
What Do UAE Banks Review?
Customer due diligence, commonly called KYC, helps a bank establish who the customer is and how the account will be used. CBUAE guidance addresses company identity, ownership, account purpose, risk assessment and ongoing monitoring.
Describe the actual business rather than relying on the free zone’s name. Explain what customers pay you for, where work takes place and how money moves. A consultant, goods trader and holding company will have different commercial explanations.
This guide focuses on compliance preparation. For the wider application process, see our UAE corporate bank account guide.
Evidence to Organise for the Bank’s Checklist
Use the selected bank’s current checklist. The table below is a preparation framework, not a declaration that every listed document is mandatory for every company.
| Review area | Prepare and confirm |
|---|---|
| Company identity | Current licence, incorporation records and constitutional documents applicable to the legal form. |
| Ownership and control | Shareholder records and an ownership chart explaining corporate layers and the individuals behind them. |
| People and authority | Requested identification and evidence authorising the signatories to act for the company. |
| Address and operations | Accepted address evidence and a description of where and how the business operates. |
| Funding and transactions | Funding explanation, requested supporting records and realistic estimates of account activity. |
Bank-specific example: Emirates NBD’s online business-account page lists a valid licence, relevant company agreements, shareholder identification and tenancy evidence. Its published route also has eligibility conditions. Use those requirements for that route rather than applying them to every UAE bank.
Our business bank account documents guide helps organise the wider file.
Source of Funds and Source of Wealth
Source of funds explains the origin of money funding the account or a transaction. Source of wealth explains how a person accumulated their overall wealth. CBUAE guidance links the extent of verification to risk and allows banks to set evidence requirements through their own policies.
For example, a founder funding the company from employment savings could prepare the relevant bank history and income records if requested. A shareholder loan should be described as a loan and supported by its actual documentation. These are illustrative preparation examples, not a promise that particular evidence will satisfy the bank.
Make the explanation consistent with the payer, amount and supporting records. If requested evidence is unavailable, explain the gap and ask the bank what alternative it can consider.
Do You Need a Dedicated Office for Banking?
Check the bank’s accepted address evidence and explain your operating model. Office type alone does not establish acceptance.
Published example: Wio’s onboarding guide lists a co-working or flexi-desk agreement with a valid facility address among its acceptable address documents. The same guide sets other application and identification conditions. Address-document acceptance is one part of the assessment.
Describe where staff work, where records are kept and whether goods are stored or handled by another provider. Supply genuine agreements relevant to those arrangements when requested. A licence, address record and explanation of operations should tell a consistent story.
Explain Expected Account Activity
CBUAE guidance requires banks to assess expected activity and investigate material inconsistencies. Prepare an estimate grounded in your business plan, contracts or trading history:
- Who will pay the company, and for which goods or services?
- Which countries and currencies will be involved?
- What payment values and frequency do you expect?
- Will funds come from customers, shareholders, investors or payment platforms?
- Which suppliers or other counterparties will receive payments?
If the company has not started trading, label estimates as forecasts and explain their assumptions. Distinguish signed business from proposals and anticipated sales.
Free Zone Banking Preparation Checklist
- Confirm eligibility: check the bank’s rules for your entity, owners and signatories.
- Request the current checklist: confirm document formats, validity and certification requirements.
- Reconcile company records: resolve differences in names, ownership, activities and addresses.
- Prepare the business explanation: connect the licensed work, funding and expected payments.
- Track follow-up requests: record the requested item, responsible person and response deadline.
Submit accurate records and distinguish missing evidence from information that does not apply. For further preparation, read our KYC requirements guide.
Compliance Continues After Account Opening
Banks conduct periodic and event-driven reviews. Changes in ownership, business operations, company details or unexplained account activity can prompt a refresh. Review frequency depends on the bank’s risk assessment; there is no single schedule for all free zone companies.
Assign someone to monitor bank requests and maintain current company records. Keep supporting documents for business receipts and payments so you can explain transactions when asked.
A bank may decline or end a relationship where it cannot complete required due diligence or where the customer falls outside its risk appetite. Preparation supports a clear assessment; the decision remains with the bank.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are free zone companies automatically high risk?
Assess the actual company profile rather than assigning a rating from its jurisdiction alone. Ownership, business activity, geography and expected transactions are relevant to the bank’s review.
Is a website mandatory for every application?
Check the selected bank’s instructions. Wio’s standard onboarding guide describes website or social-media links as optional. A specific bank request should still be addressed.
Can I apply if the company has no trading history?
Check the route’s eligibility and explain the company’s stage honestly. Emirates NBD’s published online-account criteria distinguish company statements for an existing business from partner statements for a new business.
Can Business & Beyond guarantee bank approval?
No. We can help organise the file and identify questions to resolve. The bank applies its own eligibility, compliance and acceptance assessment.
